Garden Pots Tutorial

I’ve been meaning to make some pots to use on my balcony for some time now. I really would like to start growing some veggies out there as we usually get a lot of sun out there and it would be perfect for growing sun-loving plants like tomatoes and zucchinis. However I wanted BIG pots for that – and the options at the garden store were too expensive so I made my own. It’s very simple.

Materials

  • Landscaping fabric, potting felt, or an old tarp
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Pins

Directions

Cut out a circle from your material/felt/tarp

Cut out a rectangle – the desired height of your pot x [(the diameter of your circle x 3.14) + 1 inch]

Sew up the rectangle with 1/2 inch seam allowance

Apply your tube to your circle

If you wish, hem the top of your pot.

Now plant your veggies in your new, lovely and large pots.

Note about materials: My blue pots are made from a polyethylene tarp. They were a little challenging but not impossible to sew on my home machine. The feed dogs wouldn’t run properly with this material, though setting my machine to a basting stitch really helped. The brown pots are made from polyethylene potting felt which was super easy to sew but I doubled as I was a little wary about durability.
